EntreSutra

Soumodip Sarkar

As entrepreneurship and innovation become the new corporate and societal mantra, this book peers through what entrepeneurship science has to tell us, glancing back and looking forward to what entrepreneurship and innovation mean, and unravels key ingredients for success. Covering a vast and complex terrain, we uncover seven pillars that determine entrepreneurial success, providing insights stringed together from different fields of knowledge, to narrate a compelling and realistic account. While each of these pillars constitute a story in their own right, taken together a fabric is woven which permits the reader to appreciate the entrepreneurial journey and to draw lessons for their own endeavours as they encounter Aha! moments on the way. The book draws upon research in diverse fields to understand how innovation unravels; the need for balancing conflicting goals; as well as the importance of promoting entrepreneurship from within. EntreSutra will whet the appetite of the curious, and help demystify the essence of creation.

The book aims to provide solid knowledge regarding the concepts of entrepreneurship and innovation and to make known the interconnections and interdependencies between both concepts. Although it was based on the book published in Portugal, it has about 30-40% different material from the first edition of the book “Empreendorismo e Inovação” - Escolar Editora. The contextualization of the case of Brazil in the field of entrepreneurship and innovation is presented and the similarities and differences between Brazil and the other so-called BRIC countries (Brazil, Russia, India and China) are highlighted.

Innovation, Market Archetypes and Outcome

Innovation, Market Archetypes and Outcome

An integrated framework

Soumodip Sarkar

Innovation is the key to firm competitiveness and growth yet studying innovation is much like the ancient parable about a group of blind men each touching a different part of an elephant. This book is a fresh new approach to understanding innovation - market linkages using one unified framework. This book examines an integrated innovation environment. Four market archetypes as well as the market outcome for each archetype are described. Innovation dynamics including commoditization, the constant innovation challenge and the sustainability of innovation are analyzed along with cases including the iPod, Lego, Barbie, the browser wars and Google. A diagnostic matrix is presented which enables one to take a “snapshot” of a product in the innovation environment. This book is an invaluable tool for the academic, the manager and the consultant to understand "where" a firm is located in an innovation environment, "why" it is so located and provides valuable clues as to "what" to do when designing strategy.

This book aims to provide solid knowledge regarding the concepts of entrepreneurship and innovation and to make known the interconnections and interdependencies between both concepts. The book addresses several questions, such as: Are business creation and entrepreneurship the same thing? Are entrepreneurs born this way or can entrepreneurship be learned? What are the characteristics of an entrepreneur? What are the main measures of entrepreneurship in a country? What distinguishes invention from innovation? What are the various forms of innovation? What is the innovation process? What are the general steps involved in creating innovative companies, from idea to implementation? In summary, this book attempts to explain the concepts, importance, “ingredients” and processes of entrepreneurship and innovation, and to highlight the fact that the two concepts are inseparable.
